Dogs defiant in Darwin

The Western Bulldogs have held on to win their NAB Cup Round One clash with North Melbourne. The 11 point win was sealed by a supergoal from defender Lindsey Gilbee with less than three minutes on the clock. A quick handball from Brad Johnson allowed Gilbee to kick truly from outside 50 and score 9 points, to give the Dogs a match winning lead. The Bulldogs move to Round 2 of the NAB Cup knockout competition and will meet the winner of the Brisbane Lions vs. Essendon match tonight on the Gold Coast. [Read more]

2008 Crystal Ball - OWAAT Edition

Well it’s back. The new-look, much talked about, much debated, much criticised and much enjoyed famous OWAAT Crystal Ball series. The 2008 AFL Premiership Season brings with it very few certainties, like all AFL seasons. However, one thing is for certain, the predicted Crystal Ball rankings will be, like my universities mathematics exam questions, far from correct! 2008 Predicitons

Every year on the AFL Online forums a thread starts up about predicting the big events in the given year. I don’t think anyone takes it seriously but when you look back over it at the end of the year you tend to find there are always some big surprises that no one would have predicted, the ones that everyone managed to predict and then you get the ones which you might giggle about at the start of the year but when it turns out true you don’t know whether they’re a genius, lucky or so one eyed they picked their favorite player and hoped it would come true. Final Siren for Goldspink

Veteran AFL umpire Darren Goldspink has today announced that his final game as an AFL umpire will be tomorrow nights NAB Cup match between St Kilda and Richmond at the Telstra Dome. The 43 year old today held a press conference where he announced his decision and used the old cliche that he knew it was time to call it quits. Over his long career as an umpire Goldspink umpired a total of 371 home & away season matches and got the chance to umpire in 6 AFL Grand Finals. [Read more]

Crows belt Pies in NAB opener

After another long wait, footy is back for 2008, with the NAB Cup kicking off on Saturday night. The city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, hosted Adelaide and Collingwood after converting a polo field into a football ground at the Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club just to the south west of the capital. A second quarter surge helped Adelaide set up a 47 point lead at half time and they cruised to an 81 point thumping with the Crows young ruckman showing some good early signs. [Read more]
