Blacktown for West Sydney team

With all the talk of the GC17 bid and the AFL’s plan to have a team on the Gold Coast, the AFL has shown that it is also focased on getting its 18th license by announcing that it is working with Blacktown City Council to facilitate a team in West Sydney by 2012. Blacktown will become the new home of the West Sydney team with the AFL announcing that the Blacktown Olympic Park will be used as the teams training and adminstration facilities, while ANZ Stadium will become the clubs home ground. The AFL are keen to push a teams into the Gold Coast and West Sydney which are among Australia’s fastest growing regions as AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou outlined today. “There is a huge population here it has the fastest growing economy in Australia with the Gold Coast and we think there is a great sense of community out here, which is very common among our code.” He also stated that creating this team in West Sydney is an important step in the growth of the competition.
