Over Summer people often asked me if I was looking forward to footy season. My response, you betcha!

It’s great to have footy back and the betting markets that come with it.

The season kicks off tonight with Adelaide hosting the Bombers at AAMI Stadium. These two sides have played off in some close contests the previous two times they’ve met. Last season it was Adelaide who got the upper hand by less than a kick, the season before it was the Bombers.

The two sides rarely meet each other twice in the one season which isn’t ideal for gaining data but a few key stats come to mind.

Since the end of 2007 Adelaide has won 6 of their 7 clashes against the Bombers. The average margin in these matches has been more than 40 points.

I’m happy to take Adelaide at the -13.5 tonight paying $1.92 on Sportsbet.

On Saturday evening Fremantle will host cross-town rivals West Coast in the WA Derby. Earlier in the week Fremantle were value paying over $2 head to head. They’ve since been back in to $1.92 equal favourites on Sportsbet.

Fremantle have a much healthier list than West Coast going in to this match. Aaron Sandilands will be missing from the Fremantle squad which dents their chances.

I can’t confidently back either side here which is why I’m sitting out. If you fancy an exotic bet maybe Hayden Ballantyne for most goals paying $11 might be worth a small bet.

Check back next week for part 2!
