Bomber Jason Winderlich has endured a difficult road to recovery over the past twelve months after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament in round four of the 2011 home and away season. However, it was announced today that Bartel is a late withdrawal from the Geelong team. The Cats have named emergency players as Shannon Byrnes, Tom Gillies, and George Horlin-Smith, with one of them expected to take Bartel’s place.

As Melbourne’s Liam Jurrah returns through the VFL this Saturday against Geelong, he will be joined by debutant Jack Viney. The Demons are confident Jurrah is ready for his first match for the year after battling a wrist injury through the pre-season. Melbourne’s football manager, Josh Mahoney confirmed on the club’s website that Jurrah has been training well over the last few weeks and is ready for the VFL.
Meanwhile, Viney has been granted special approval to join the Demon’s VFL side a year early and is expected to be drafted by the Demons at the end of this year. Viney’s drafting to the senior side will be consistent with the AFL father-and son rule.
On Thursday night, Jack Watts was not named in the Melbourne line-up for this weekend. It has been announced Watts will also play in the VFL match on Saturday.
After being hospitalised last week, it has been revealed that Kangaroo Scott McMahon is still recovering from a condition called urticaria, otherwise known as hives. McMahon is currently in hospital being treated for the condition with cortico steroids in an effort to reduce the rashes and joint inflammation he has been experiencing.
Understandably, McMahon’s return to the North Melbourne defense is being approached with caution by the club. Steve Saunders, the Roos’ Director of Medical Services has said that it McMahon will be considered on a week-to-week basis until the club is confident the condition has been completely treated and McMahon is no longer at risk.
Nonetheless, Saunders doesn’t think McMahon will miss too many games and believes if all goes we he will return to the side within the coming weeks.
