Bailey’s ‘competitive’ edge

As a supporter, I hate the word ‘competitive.’ Too often it stands in place of ‘we lost but we’re glad it wasn’t a thrashing.’ For struggling teams it is a word that qualifies a loss but for Champion teams it’s about winning and losing (not by how much.) The Demons face Geelong this weekend. Perhaps this is why Melbourne coach Dean Bailey is setting his supporters up for a ‘competitive’ loss. It’s official, Chris Judd will captain Carlton in 2008. The decision was made over last nights board meeting and was announced at a press conference held at MC Labor Park this afternoon. It was all announced that Nick Stevens will be vice captain. The announcement has come after months of speculation as to who will captain the Blues. The issue caused an uproar when it was reported Carlton offered Judd the captaincy in order to lure him to the club, the problem being Lance Whitnalls career had yet to be decided. Read More »

Carlton forward Brad Fisher will miss the start of the home and away season after breaking the base of his thumb in Saturday nights match against Port Adelaide. Fisher had a pin inserted to the base of his thumb this afternoon which will keep him on the sidelines for six to eight weeks. Fisher will join the likes of Cain Ackland, Clinton Benjamin, Adam Bentick, Chris Judd and Andrew Walker on the injury list at Carlton. Read More »

Sydney midfielder Nick Malceski could miss the 2008 home and away season after he injured his knee during the third quarter of todays 2 point loss against Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium. The 23-year-old will have scans tomorrow which are expected to confirm a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The devistating injury occurred when Malceski turned to avoid a tackle with his right knee buckling under the weight and pressure. Chris Judd will be at Carlton next year after Carlton and West Coast finally came to an agreement over the trade of arguably the best player in the competition. The two clubs agreed on a deal that would see Carlton receiving Judd and pick 46 in the national draft whilst West Coast receive picks 3 and 20 along with promising young forward Josh Kennedy. Negotiations between the clubs have been going on since Judd nominated Carlton as his preferred club over a week ago. Hamill announces retirement

30 year old St Kilda forward Aaron Hamill has announced his retirement from football after a 190 game career. The former Blue fought a chronic knee injury over the past three seasons, which restricted him to only 21 games over that period. Hamill attempted a modified pre-season program in his bid to play in 2007, but was ruled out for the start of the year when his right knee didn’t cope well with increased training. When he tried once again to come back again mid-season, the joint flared up and Hamill was ruled out for the rest of 2007. Read More »
