Welcome to another year of REB’s rubbish. Before you read on please be aware that last season I was the modern equivalent of Lou Richard’s famous ‘kiss of death’ so please take these selections with a healthy dose of Sodium Chloride. Read More »

REB’s 2008 Supercoach bargains

For those of you who are entering a Supercoach Dream Team league you’ll soon find out the ten million dollar salary cap is as tight as Dolly Parton’s bra. The proven players in the league are very expensive and you can only fit so many of them into your team. Read More »

2008 Crystal Ball – OWAAT Edition

Well it’s back. The new-look, much talked about, much debated, much criticised and much enjoyed famous OWAAT Crystal Ball series. The 2008 AFL Premiership Season brings with it very few certainties, like all AFL seasons. However, one thing is for certain, the predicted Crystal Ball rankings will be, like my universities mathematics exam questions, far from correct! Nevertheless, despite the massive blow to my slender credibility and the overall frivolity of it all, my football head is again firmly planted back on the chopping block. And as always there is the opportunity for you to have your say also. So get comfortable, prepare to be shocked, get ready to laugh out loud and mock, it’s time to re-launch this puppy. Read More »

2008 Predicitons

Every year on the AFL Online forums a thread starts up about predicting the big events in the given year. I don’t think anyone takes it seriously but when you look back over it at the end of the year you tend to find there are always some big surprises that no one would have predicted, the ones that everyone managed to predict and then you get the ones which you might giggle about at the start of the year but when it turns out true you don’t know whether they’re a genius, lucky or so one eyed they picked their favorite player and hoped it would come true. Cast your mind forward to the year 2028. Will there be as many changes in the next twenty years as there has been in the past? The AFL will never be set in stone in terms of participants, locations and such as it is now a business and not ‘merely’ a sport. Read More »

Is it just me or is this guy hard to take seriously? I don’t mean that in a bad way it is just that I have been listening to him on radio for years and watching him on the Footy Show and he always comes across as the “The Funny Guy”. Read More »

Bringing the Game Into Disrepute

In a week that has seen an innings and some victory for the Australian  Test team, the conclusion of the Melbourne Spring Carnival and a furore over A-League crowd violence it seems AFL is still king. The controversy of Cousins, the perils of Pratt and the juggernaut that is Chris Judd continue to eat up column inches in the AFL off season. Yet amid all this it is the plight of the Kangaroos that has me wondering just who is bringing the game into disrepute? Read More »

Grading the Trades

With the AFL trade week done and dusted it’s time to have a look at my initial thoughts on how the teams that made a deal fared. While some teams showed courage in making some moves other like Fremantle and Essendon decided to stand pat. Initially I feel that St Kilda, Carlton and the Western Bulldogs were the big winners while Adelaide and Geelong come out on the other side of the ledger. Read More »

Trade Winds: Part 1

For the past few season the trade period has produced fewer and fewer deals between AFL clubs. In my opinion it is due to several factors. Firstly clubs don’t want to look bad if they trade a player that then improves his on field performance, secondly clubs don’t seem to understand that to get something decent you need to give something decent in return. Finally, the flaws in the AFL draft, trade and free agency systems mean that some deals are destined to fail, see Stevens, Nick. Read More »

What Grand Final week means to me

For any football fan, Grand Final week should be the pinnacle of supporting your club. When the Cats are on TV I ride every bump, curse every maggot and scream and yell and damage the furniture for two hours while my beloved Cats do battle. Normally I am quite a mild individual but I turn, dare I say it..feral when my Cats lace up. However being a Cats fan, my only memories of Grand Final day are of extreme disappointment. Read More »
