With the Gold Coast Football Club previously announcing that they weren’t going to be using a mascot, league officials yesterday confirmed that the newest club will be know as the ‘Suns’ after it was revealed that the AFL had registered the domain name goldcoastsuns.com.au.

It is believe that franchise will still officially be called the Gold Coast Football Club but a sun is tipped to be added to the current GC logo. Despite the speculation Gold Coast boss Travis Auld refused to reveal whether the club had come to a decision but confirmed that they have been looking at nicknames. “There have certainly been a lot of names thrown around and that (Suns) has been one of them,” he said. “There are certainly legalities associated with choosing a name and that part is a rigorous process in terms of finding out what is available. It has been an exciting, fun process … but we can only have one name.” The club could face a problem with the new name, which is trademarked to American basketball team Pheonix. Australian NBL team Townsville were forced to change their nickname from the Suns to the Crocodiles after a dispute with the trademark owner, but the GCFC are confident that being in a different sport may allow them to use the name. They are also prepared to use ‘Sons’ if any problems arise.
