I wouldn't attend games if they went less than 2 hours. Sorry, just not worth it :)

I like it the way it is.

Bull crap

Make games slightly shorter... 15 minute quaters instead of 20
or 17.5

going from 22 to 30 round isn't too much to ask for people getting paid 10x more than an average salary...

Let teams organise their own preseason practice matches... not through an AFL organised competition where team can determine exactly how many games they want to play...

With the new teams it would be harder and it would go to 34 rounds... which it getting to the brink... but I think it is achievable... i know its alot more physically demanding than other sports... but soccer for instance they can play upto 60 games a year...

Soccer teams rotate players far, far more than AFL ones do. An AFL club will only rest their gun players if they are injured and unable to play. An EPL club will rest their gun players because the other team is shit house. AFL clubs wouldn't do this either if the season was lengthened. Not enough players in a squad to do it, and the depth of talent available wouldn't justify extending the squad sizes.

The game is far less physically demanding. Pretty much no heavy hits. Added to that European soccer is far more professionally run and the clubs would be looking after their players as well as any other club there is.

Playing 30+ games a year and players will be dropping left right and centre from round 25 onwards.

And reducing the length of the games would be shit.

Carlton FC

3 wooden spoons in 5 years
Worst performed club of the decade
2 presidents on criminal charges
Drug history
Sanctioned for cheating the salary cap
Tanking for draft picks
Rape allegations from their own president
Under counter payments to players
Statistically worse than a dying Fitzroy
Eye gouging captain

I'll lay 2-1 on Anthony/Cloke Henderon/your highest goal scorer.

If either Anthony/Cloke/Henderson miss 5+ games through injury (not form), bets are off.

I would. If there was a comparative diminishing cost in the price of attending the shorter version of the game... which won't happen in a gazillion years whilst the AFL is hellbent in squeezing every single $ out of the game.
Hell, part the reason why the quarters are so long now if for the breaks in between goals where the guys out on the ground have to wait for the advertising on tv to finish..

Increasing the length of the season = Would make the need for an increase in list size/'roster'. Clubs would demand more players. Players would demand more money. Want a sure fire way to cull weaker clubs? Make them outlay more, for less chance (expanding the competition) of ultimate glory.

W00t, let's have relegation as well to grab a slice of that Euro pie.

Perfect... increase the salary caps... take the tight grip the afl has on clubs nuts on generating money... stops teams hoping that they play Collignwood at home in which they would... Stop enforcing clubs to lock onto one of two grounds... or buy out the rest of Etihad's contract and own the stadium with the billions of dollar the afl has... and make it so that Club actually make money per attendance... and not requiring 30k to break even...

You can't have relegation/promotion here cause of stadiums and money... but have a cup system that allows all teams to participate... including lower levels from around the country... that would mean teams have their own reserves team and not linked to others... this would also mean that people who don't necessarily make AFL... but can still play lower level and compete against AFL players...

The cup would become massive...

Adding extra players to the bench and expanding the teams list and reducing the number of players on the field to 16 would ensure teams can get through a 30 or 34 game season...

I know these changes seem massive... but what you get is a fair game in terms of fixture, fair game in terms of team's playing higher drawing teams at home, fair game in terms of awarding the best team for the "YEAR" not "Month", fair game in terms of seeing more AFL games so more money is generated and paid back to clubs and players, fair game in terms of bigger sponsorship due to more game, and bigger tv rights, fair game as people will still have the cup system so the finals feel isn't gone, fair game as the truely great team would be rewarded with Cup and League if they are good enough... It is wholesale changes... but if this game is going to seriously be professional... it is time to play an even field... no bullshit 7th place side that has a shit team (Carlton) gets lucky with injuries and on day performances... and somehow steals the flag... if Carlton do steal the flag this year... as highly unlikely as it could ever be... the chance is there... is that really fair??? is it fair on Collingwood? Is it fair on Geelong?
Goal Tally after Round 22:

Cloke + Anthony = 37
Henderson + Carlton top Goal Scorer = 65

Awesome Smiddaz quotes... not direct quotes... just for memory sake:

-Robinson was the reason Carlton lost the game against Freo.
(keep in mind Robinson had for 3 qrts shut down Freo's best rebounder and when moved to the midfield in the last, Carlton were 32 points down and Carlton started dominating and got to 6 points of winning)

-Henderson has had a poor season (refer to 2010)

these ideas all seem good gordon, but think about it from outside the afl circle.
cricket for example, just 2 or 3 days into their contract of having the mcg, and they dont want to give it up.

first of all, let me get this clear. your idea involves having the normal season roster, + cup games?

a 34 round season (its about 4 weeks of pre-season, 22 rounds, plus 4 weeks of finals, so 32 weeks at the moment), which isnt taking into account the pre season, and plus the cup system (this is the round robin knockout competition i presume) would be the final match of the year, so have it a bit longer. this would be intruding on crickets months by a fair margin, they just wouldnt allow it.

lets face it, no sport in the world is perfect, and this is australias game, so why not let it be half-assed :P

I like this point, because Gordon seems to think that European sport is perfect.
