I really can't see Adelaide making it, but yes they would probably embarrass them atm.

I wouldnt rule hawthorn dropping out either, not very likely but weirder things have happened...like losing 6 out of the first 7 then being talked up as a contender for the flag.
Adelaide are probably gone, but some tough games for sydney/carlton/north this week as well. All facing top 4 opposition

This is what I have liked least about our season so far
I know it was only against w/c... but our comeback win last week showed a lot more heart than some of our previous showings...
Hopefully we can continue building on that!!

Bomber Thompson has even said he doesn't like playing Carlton... are they gonna beat us if we meet in finals? 99% sure yes... do they prefer playing a Sydney, Kangas or Freo... most definitely... I would even go as far as saying they would prefer to play the dogs than us...
I actually agree with both Woody and wait for it... mini... we are mentally weak... the weakest side mentally in the competition... put alittle bit of expectation on us and we fold like a jewish poker player... we miss easy chance that we work so hard to create... and again we lose concentration...
However... if the expectation isn't there... carlton can play really good footy and beat any team on their day... will they win the flag... 120% no... could they upset a team during the finals period... i wouldn't count it out...
I truely miss the whole Smids "ROFL"s... bring em back son

Carlton won't beat Geelong in the finals Gordon, too much experience there. Maybe in a year or two.
And REB, although you go for Geelong so you're obviously focused on the upper tier, there are a ton of fans who do want their boys to make finals and elimination finals are always entertaining for my money. Surely you can remember a time where you wanted the Cats to make the 8 at all rather than worrying about whether you'll be playing the Saints or the Doggies first week.

After an extended period of crapola yeah you really want your boys in the finals but if you step away from your footy jumper and look at the 'product' offered you'll see that there is less excitement generated by some of these bottom eight finals. Remember the Sydney v North final...19K WTF? At the moment we've got 'finals lite' just so the AFL can count the coin. I get all that but it's an inferior product and on that night in Sydney people voted with their feet.
I'm old school and I don't think you can beat the final five. The top ranked side gets adequate reward for finishing top, a week off with another one if they can win first up. The second and third ranked sides get a second crack and if they win their second final they can get the week off. The fourth and fifth ranked side get a crack but only one chance. However, if you are winnning elimination finals then you are playing teams coming off a loss so you've got the edge at the right time of the year in terms of confidence.
Since the final eight was finally fixed in 2000, no team has won the comp outside the top four. You get just as much out of a strong finish to the year than you would from falling into the finals..you even get people saying that it would be 'better for team x to miss the finals this year'. Perhaps Essendon in 2009 is an example of this.
I know why we have a top eight but I don't think it provides a fitting spectacle for the climax of the season. If you finish 6th you should be having an early Mad Monday.
regards,
REB

With the 8 you get awful teams such as Essendon of 2009 or Carlton of this year getting into finals and being nowhere near a finals worthy side.

However, essendon 2009 were a far more damaging side than hawks or port in that race. Like carlton this year, they had no form late in the season, but earlier patchs of form were good enough imo to deserve them a place in the 8.
Adelaide could do some low-end damage if they make it, and starting 0-6, their fans will take glee in it. Most afl fans would love for their club to win from 8th one day, im sure. Adelaide maing it would have nothing to lose.
However, if North Melbourne makes finals, they will be the worst finals side I can possibly ever remember. Surely the only finals side ever with absolutley no chance of winning the flag.
Once GC and GWS are in, 8 will seem better. And a final 6 out of 18 teams sounds really attractive imo. But if it extends to 9 or 10, absolute predictable money-grubbing fail.
Without looking at clubs upcoming games at all, finals could look like this.
1. Collingwood
2. Geelong
3. St Kilda
4. Western Bulldogs
5. Hawthorn
6. Fremantle
7. Carlton
8. Sydney
With Freo starting to wilt to injuries and tired bodies, and no real finals experience, its a 5 team race.
Western Bulldogs will win the flag imo.
Thanks for the Memories CESC
