Matthew Scarlett on the 2010 Prelim against Collingwood:"They just annihilated us early and we were a bit shell-shocked. I’ve played for a while and I’ve never seen a side [apply so much] pressure. They just swarm you and it’s like they’ve got three or four extra players out there. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

With the 8 you get awful teams such as Essendon of 2009 or Carlton of this year getting into finals and being nowhere near a finals worthy side.
More evidence was supplied last weekend...
6th - Hawks rolled by Port in an awful performance.
7th - Carlton spanked by the Pies in an even worse performance.
8th - Sydney. Roos teams copping regular big losses now.
9th - North. Not in the same league as the top sides and thus does not deserve to make the eight this year.
10th - Adelaide. It rained. They lost. Too Richmond. Adios.
The eight is such a joke that Melbourne and Essendon are somehow back in the race. On recent form the Demons look the most deserving finalist.

having an unfair draw is the reason there is an 8 team final

Wrong. The reason there is an unfair draw is the same as the reason for a final 8. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. The AFL is not about equity.

Finals are a great aspect of our sport, but we need a way to reward the minor premiers the most and that should be cutting out some of the lesser teams playing finals. The AFL has had worse finals systems then the current one though.

I still feel pissed off about the 2007 Hawthorn flag... teams that dominate during the year deserve a trophy... not the same reward as the team the finishes second... third or fourth...
Final 8 as indicate is a joke...
Say the best team of the year cops massive injuries just before finals... why should it be about the best team with least injuries around september? The premiership cup should be for the best team... nothing else...
A cup involving every team will give the whole knockout tension finals lovers crave... also gives out more games... hence higher and the cup final would generate as much fans as GF...
and the final few rounds of the home and away season... especially in a close season... would be high tension...
The reward of finishing higher on the ladder is to be placed in the better pool when the cup draw happens for the following year... so there is always a reason to play... especially if there is 4 pools...
I know only people who love the world game or following European sports would love this...

Can't play everyone once....the home ground debate would be ridiculous.

Make games slightly shorter... 15 minute quaters instead of 20
or 17.5
going from 22 to 30 round isn't too much to ask for people getting paid 10x more than an average salary...
Let teams organise their own preseason practice matches... not through an AFL organised competition where team can determine exactly how many games they want to play...
With the new teams it would be harder and it would go to 34 rounds... which it getting to the brink... but I think it is achievable... i know its alot more physically demanding than other sports... but soccer for instance they can play upto 60 games a year...
