As a supporter, I hate the word ‘competitive.’ Too often it stands in place of ‘we lost but we’re glad it wasn’t a thrashing.’ For struggling teams it is a word that qualifies a loss but for Champion teams it’s about winning and losing (not by how much.) The Demons face Geelong this weekend. Perhaps this is why Melbourne coach Dean Bailey is setting his supporters up for a ‘competitive’ loss. I counted him using the word 27 times in his press conference at the MCG on Thursday. Don’t believe me? Watch the video.
