Leigh Matthews has shocked the football world this morning after announcing he has handed in his resignation from the Lions despite recently having his contract extended till the end of 09.
The three time premiership coach spoke in front of a packed media conference alongside Brisbane co-captains Luke Power, Nigel Lappin, Simon Black, Jonathan Brown and chairman Tony Kelly.
“It’s just time for me to move on, for (me) and the rejuvenation of this football club,” said Matthews at the media conference in Brisbane.
“It’s not about where the team is. The team clearly for the last couple of years has been on the fringe of playing finals.
“The team won 10 games this year and was believed to have under-performed, which means that there is obviously a finals berth there. But that goes for probably 10 clubs in the competition.”
There is already speculation that former Brisbane premiership captain Michael Voss will take over as Lions coach in 09 despite recently signing a two year contract as an assistant coach at West Coast.
