The season officially got underway last weekend with the Swans handing the newest franchise GWS Giants a thumping to the tune of 63 points.

However this is the weekend that things really heat up and with any luck we’ll be able to make a profit to start the season on a high note.

There was money to be in the weeks leading up to round 1 with the Blues and Magpies big drifters against their respective opponents. The Tigers were out to about $3.90 and have been backed right in to $2.67. The reason for this is the doubts over the Blues side on Thursday night. The Blues will be without their 3 best defenders and could find it hard against the likes of Jack Riewoldt and Tyrone Vickery.

If there’s any value in this market I would have to say it’s for the Blues but I’ll be avoiding this match.

On Saturday afternoon the Gold Coast Suns will host Adelaide at Metricon Stadium. The Crows are up and firing coming into round 1 fresh off winning the NAB Cup which will do wonders for their confidence and they will be looking to continue their hot streak against the Suns.

We all expect Gold Coast to naturally improve with age and experience this season, however they’re still a very raw side and I can’t go past the fact Adelaide thumped them by 10 goals twice last season.

Adelaide to clear the 25.5 point line is great value at $1.90.

On Saturday afternoon the MCG will play host to what we would usually consider to be an underwhelming match between Melbourne and the Brisbane Lions. However the passing of club great Jim Stynes will cast many eyes upon this match as we await to see how the young Demons will respond to an emotion packed fortnight.

History tells us that these two teams don’t mind playing each other and have had some close battles in recent years. However the Demons have come away victors the past 3 matches and the Lions haven’t beaten the Demons at the MCG in the past 4 times they’ve met at the home of football.

I’m tipping Melbourne to get the job done between 1-39 points with nice odds of $2.35
