Biography
Matthew Lloyd was born on 16th April 1978 in Melbourne, Victoria. He played his junior football with Avondale Heights in the Essendon District Football League before moving into the TAC Cup with the Western Jets as a teenager. His talent in front of goal was obvious early, and Essendon secured him as a priority selection in the 1995 pre season draft, a compensation pick the club received after losing several players to the newly formed Fremantle Football Club.
Lloyd made his debut in 1995 at just seventeen years of age and quickly established himself as Essendon’s key forward in the years that followed. By the late 1990s he had become one of the most dangerous forwards in the competition, pairing strong overhead marking with a composed and accurate set shot routine that made him a constant threat inside fifty.
The peak of Lloyd’s individual career arrived in the early 2000s. He won his first Coleman Medal in 2000, the same year he was part of Essendon’s dominant premiership winning side, and followed it up with further Coleman Medals in 2001 and 2003. Across that period he was named an All-Australian five times, in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003, cementing his reputation as the finest key forward of his era.
Lloyd’s consistency in front of goal was remarkable. He finished as Essendon’s leading goalkicker in twelve separate seasons, a stretch that ran from 1997 through to 2009 with only an interruption in 2006 due to injury. His best single season came in 2000, when he kicked 109 goals, a tally that reflected both his own precision and the quality of the Essendon side around him during that premiership year.
In 2006 Lloyd was appointed Essendon captain, a role he held for four seasons until his retirement in 2009. Leading the club through a period of transition after the premiership years, he continued to perform at a high level as a senior figure and mentor to a younger Essendon group, even as his own output naturally eased in the latter stages of his career.
Lloyd retired at the end of the 2009 season having played 270 games and kicked 926 goals, both entirely for Essendon. His strike rate of 3.43 goals per game across a fifteen year career places him among the most efficient forwards the game has produced. In recognition of his standing as one of Essendon’s and the competition’s great goalkickers, Matthew Lloyd was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2013, a fitting tribute to a career built on consistency, precision and longevity in front of goal.
