It has been a nightmare of a season for Melbourne, sitting at the bottom of the table with just one win from ten appearances.

When you thought it couldn’t get any worse club champion David Neitz announces his retirement and now high flying star Russell Robertson will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his right Achilles in Sunday’s loss to St Kilda at Telstra Dome. The 29 year old will undergo almost immediate surgery to reattach a severed tendon, as to prevent any complications that could arise from leaving it untreated.

Melbourne doctors said they will patient with Robertson’s recovery and will provide him with the appropriate rehabilitation. Former Hawk Simon Beaumont, was forced to retire after tearing his achelles in 2005, but Melbourne are confident that Robertson won’t suffer the same fate.

Despite this many other players have made successful comebacks from the injury in the last five years including Collingwood’s Anthony Rocca, Port Adelaide’s Michael Wilson and former Richmond captain Wayne Campbell.
