Banfield, taken with pick 41 in the 2008 National Draft, racked up 15 touches and kicked 3 goals and was one of a few Lions players to stand up when required on Saturday night.

After spending 2009 playing in the QAFL Banfield made his debut for the Lions in round 1 this season after an extraordinary pre-season. since making his debut Banfield has played in all 6 games and has booted 9 goals.

“Todd has the ability to turn up in contests,” Lions coach Michael Voss said.

“Even when you think he’s not in the contest, he has that turn of speed to get himself back involved.

“Todd has been very valuable for us. He had a quiet game last week, but has bounced back really well. For a young player to do that, it’s a real credit to him.”

Banfield is the third player recruited from WAFL side Swan Districts to earn a rising star nomination this season. Joining him is Carlton small forward Chris Yarran and West Coast ruckman Nic Naitanui.
