Unless you’re a Collingwood supporter who’s still riding a high from last season, it has been a long and summer. After losing the Ashes to the Poms all I can say is thank god they’ve pulled out the drop in pitch at the MCG and made way for some football action!

I don’t tend to make big calls in round 1 when it comes to betting but continue reading for my betting tips this week.
Carlton will host Richmond at the MCG on Thursday night to officially open the 2011 Premiership season, it’s the 4th consecutive year these two team have been involved in the season opener. Unfortunately in recent years this fixture hasn’t been a great spectacle with the Blues winning convincingly in the past two meetings by these clubs in round 1.
I’ll be surprised if it’s as one-sided as previous years with the Blues missing some key players including Jamison and Ellard to suspension and There are doubts over defender Paul Bower who is injured and Lachie Henderson having limited game-time leading up to round 1. However I still suspect the Blues to clear the 19.5 line and get their season of to a good start.
Other games that interest me are the St Kilda vs Geelong clash on Friday night. A lot of eyes will be on these two teams. They both have something to prove and it might just be enough to keep my money in my pocket. But $1.70 odds for St Kilda are juicy and very tempting.
Melbourne will host Sydney at the MCG on Sunday afternoon and will go in to the game as favourites despite Sydney making it to the second round of last years Finals series. The only thing thats turning me off Sydney here is the fact the game is played at the MCG. The Swans lost all 4 games played at the MCG last season, however 3 of them were lost by no more than a kick.
