Gold Coast’s Jaeger O’Meara outstanding debut season has seen him win the 2013 Rising Star award in a whitewash.
O’Meara polled an amazing 44 out of a possible 45 votes to win the award which is worth $20,000 in prize money.
After being picked up by the Suns with the first pick in the 2011 ‘mini-draft’, O’Meara was restricted to playing in the Suns NEAFL side for his first year on an AFL list due to his age.
However it surprised few people when the 19-year-old burst on to the scene this year. Former Essendon star even claimed that he could become “the greatest midfielder that’s ever played the game”.
And there weren’t to many that could disagree with the statement.
O’Meara averaged 21 disposals, five tackles and four marks over the season, in which he played each of the Suns 22 games. He also averaged just under a goal a game finishing the season with 16 goals to his name.
Adelaide midfielder Brad Crouch finished second behind O’Meara with 31 votes while Port Adelaide young gun Oliver Wines managed 26 votes seeing him finish in third.
